HOT & COLD
Building stronger communities together
Hot & Cold dating App is the new way of dating. It prioritizes immediacy, spontaneity, and in-person connection. Users meet quickly based on the proximity to gauge their chemistry, instead of spending days messaging back-and-forth. We found ways to implement gamification elements to make the interactions more dynamic and engaging.
Fun and Dynamic Interactions
After user logs in, they immediately see the new gamified map, with dynamic animations that move as they walk around. The potential matches rotate around the user and change based on proximity as they walk towards pink hot zones.
Tapping on the profiles leads to additional interactive features.
These fun and dynamic interactions help to maintain curiosity and an engaged community
We included games such as Two Truths and a Lie to lighten the energy around dating apps again, while helping matches get to know each other better.
To maintain curiosity and increase engagement on the app, users are rewarded with badges.
Additionally there are map tokens in case user is unable to find potential matches (perhaps early in the app’s rollout), so the user can still engage with the app and find rewards until a match shows up.
User Onboarding process
To set a stronger stage, a rules rundown and brief walkthrough of the app are provided, quickly familiarizing the user with the main functions so that they can immediately start engaging with the primary portion of the app.
Although it may seem like we are frontloading the process with a number of steps, the primary goal of this update is to make sure a new user is fully prepped, educated, and ready to interact by the time they are thrown into the live map environment.
Virtual Meetup to Speed Dating
One of the first things that came to mind in the realm of creating efficient and immediate connections for the users was the idea of virtual speed dating or a meet now function.
It would help serve as a catalyst for the users to explore the community and meet others in person.
Several screens throughout the app encourage staying safe and meeting in public spaces, some vetted by Hot & Cold.
There is also an option for the user to remove themselves from the map whenever they want.
In addition, users can report any negative behavior from matches, causing them to lose features or be suspended.
Finally, matches that are deemed “cold” or incompatible after a date will be completely removed from the user's orbit so that they can no longer see or interact with them on the app.
We followed standard conventions when building the skeleton of the onboarding flow redesign as it pertained to collecting basic user information such as phone numbers, photos, location access, and so on.
Users looked for familiarity with these app sign up steps as they have become a learned behavior. But at the same time, from a dating perspective, we observed that it’s essential to get more granular, allowing the user to start personalizing his or her experience with the app right off the bat with who they were looking for and what kinds of relationships they were after.
